Cubic Designs expands in Waupaca

Cubic Designs Inc. has broken ground on a 32,000-square-foot plant expansion project in Waupaca.

The project will increase the local manufacturing facility to a total of 106,000 square feet.

This is Cubic Designs’ fourth major expansion to its Waupaca facility.

Cubic Designs manufactures pre-engineered mezzanine systems and related structures for a variety of industrial and warehouse applications.

With its general management, sales and engineering headquartered in New Berlin, Wis., Cubic Designs opened its fabrication plant in Waupaca in 2000.

Cubic Designs employs more 70 people in the United States, with a current total of 30 in Waupaca.

“We have expanded our Waupaca facility several times before, but this project is one of the most exciting for us. Our new capabilities will open doors to many more markets for mezzanines and custom platforms. Specifically, structures that require hot rolled steel framing, and also applications with customers that require high quality, finished stainless steel,” said Mike Giffhorn, president of Cubic Designs. “We will be highly efficient in our ability to design and fabricate systems with these requirements.”

John Moore, Vice president of operations said the project will increase efficiencies for the structures they currently make. Some of the new equipment will give Cubic Designs new capabilities, as well.”

“Our new bead blast system will allow us to finish our stainless steel systems to food and beverage industry standards, just as easily as we currently powder coat finish all of our carbon steel systems,” Moore said. “Our new six-axis plasma cutter and carbon steel blasting system will allow us to efficiently process hot-rolled steel shapes, which will compliment what we already do well with our cold-formed shapes.”

The current plant expansion is part of a multi-step plan. New capital equipment are the primary drivers of this expansion, which will give Cubic Designs new capabilities with respect to stainless steel platforms and larger mezzanines.

While there are no immediate plans for new hires, as sales grow into these new areas the company anticipates an increase in the plant’s employees.

Over the past three decades, Cubic Designs has grown substantially by delivering a full complement of design, engineering, fabrication and installation services to customers across the United States.
