I-S School Board presents Star Awards

The Iola-Scandinavia School District’s Star Award recognizes people for special things they do for the district.

The winners of the Star Award are announced at the monthly meetings of the I-S School Board.

The award was recently presented to Tammy Bauer, Paul Ordway, Rhonda Fechter, Jane Myhra, Holly Neumann and Richard Wright.

Bauer was nominated by District Administrator David Dyb.

She serves as the Administrative Assistant to the District Administrator and the Board of Education, and is secretary for the school district’s Special Education program.

“She is so essential to the everyday business conducted in the District Office,” Dyb said.

“She is always willing to take on and learn new things and is a tremendous resource to me and Business Manager Sarah Thiel,” he said. “Whether it is handling open enrollment application questions, collecting data for state reports, or compiling the monthly meeting packets, Tammy is always there – going above and beyond in helping anyone who comes through the door.”

Ordway was nominated for the award by High School Principal Sara Anderson.

“Since the change of personnel in the maintenance department earlier this year, Paul has had to take on many extra jobs and responsibilities,” Anderson stated in her nomination email. “I have observed him over this time period accept any request made of him with a smile on his face and an assurance that he could get the job done.”

She pointed out that Ordway put a lot of extra effort into preparing the gymnasium for the graduation ceremony in late May.

“When we look for people who have made significant contributions to the district, I believe Paul’s service is a shining example for others,” Anderson said.

Fechter was nominated for her extra efforts to help the school district.

“Rhonda has been instrumental in securing grants for our school forest and environmental education program in the district,” said District Administrator David Dyb. “She has also spent many hours maintaining our prairie project site.”

Wright was nominated for his countless volunteer hours heading up the T-Bird Swim Team program and in appreciation for his generous contributions to the high school scholarship fund.

Neumann was nominated for her work with the T-Bird Booster Club, including her timely posts on the Facebook page, and for her time and talents photographing many school events.

Myhra was nominated for providing fair coverage of school board meetings and other school-related news.
