W-F comes up short in opener

A pair of long touchdown passes helped Adams-Friendship spoil the football season opener for Weyauwega-Fremont.

The Green Devils handed the Indians an 18-6 defeat Aug. 22 in a nonconference matchup.

A-F took an 18-0 halftime lead on Joe Duty’s TD passes of 48 yards to Zach Sparbe and 60 yards to Donnell Finch. Sparbe added a 2-yard run in the first half.

The Indians got on the board in the fourth quarter on Blake Hudziak’s 3-yard run.

Hudziak and Flease split the quarterbacking duties. Flease completed seven of 17 passes for 77 yards, while Hudziak was seven of 14 for 61 yards.

Carl Koch had 87 yards on 12 carries to lead W-F’s rushing game, while Flease finished with 85. He also caught a team-high five passes for 47 yards, while Corey Schmidt caught four for 34, Dylan Pankow had two for 29 and Koch caught one for 19.

The Indians outgained the Green Devils 212-111 on the ground, but A-F had a 212-138 advantage through the air.

Brandon Hanes led the Indians with 12 tackles, followed by Trevor Wetzel, Austin Marker and Schmidt with six each; Flease and Logan Bosquez with five; and Sam Hablewitz and Dylan Kicherer with four. Hablewitz also had an interception.

The Indians will host Brillion at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, in nonconference play. The Lions fell to Hilbert 40-0 in their opener.

W-F will also open Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Manawa.
