The West De Pere Phantoms handed the Bulldog varsity football team a 42-7 loss on Friday, Sept. 19.
West De Pere scored first with 8:52 remaining in the first quarter, but New London didn’t waste any time in evening the score.
On their first play from scrimmage, the Bulldogs completed a 45-yard pass. On the next play, Connor Hoell scampered 25 yards for a touchdown. With 8:15 remaining in the first quarter, the score was 7-7.
West De Pere began to run away with the game after that, scoring on two rushing touchdowns before the end of the first quarter to take a 21-7 lead.
In the second quarter, the Phantoms ran for two more touchdowns to make the score 35-7 at halftime.
New London received the kick to start the second half, but fumbled on the first play of the drive. The Phantoms recovered and scored on a passing touchdown with 10:36 remaining in the third quarter to make the score 42-7.
With the 35 point lead, the clock began to run continuously.
The Bulldogs kept fighting despite the deficit, as they forced a fumble and recovered the ball with 10:29 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Jonah Backus blocked a punt with 4:19 remaining in the game, but the Phantoms regained possession on an interception with 1:22 left in the game. They took a knee to end the game.
