Cuff, Margaret L.

Margaret L. Cuff, age 86 of New London, died at St. Joseph Residence on Saturday evening, September 20, 2014. 

Margaret was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on May 21, 1928, the daughter of Robert Carroll and Lenora (Pohlman) Ritchie. She grew up in Royalton, graduated from New London High School in 1946 and continued her education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison graduating in 1950 with a B.S. in Home Economics. She was a lifelong Bucky Badger fan. On June 21, 1950, Margaret was united in marriage to George Cuff at the First Congregational Church in New London. Margaret taught Home Economics for 22 years at Washington Junior High beginning in the fall of 1960 and retiring in 1983. Margaret was best known for starting Cuff’s Strawberry Farm in 1964 with her husband George, which is still in operation today. She was a lifetime member of the First Congregational United Church in New London. During her working years, Margaret was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, as well as a FHA and 4-H leader. Following her retirement she remained active by working as a substitute teacher, reading to residents at St. Joseph’s Residence, serving on the church council and volunteering in Women’s Fellowship at the church where she was a past-president. Margaret enjoyed reading, playing bridge, knitting, and baking, with birthday cakes and cinnamon rolls being her specialty. 

Margaret is survived by: her daughter, Carol (Dave) Gerlach, New London; two sons, Jim Cuff, New London, and George Jr. “Sandy” (Lois) Cuff, Hortonville; grandchildren, Jenny (Zach) Huber, Jason Cuff, Jesse (Heidi) Cuff, Jaclyn Cuff, Justin (Keri) Gerlach, Michael (Sarah) Gerlach, Nathan (Kathryn) Gerlach and Maggie (Alex) Sudbrink; and great-grandchildren, Tristan, Ethan, Mya, Vivian, and Oliver, with two more on the way. Margaret is further survived by two sisters, Mary (Lee) Hershberger and Roberta (Charles) Mattka; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Margaret is preceded in death by her parents; husband, George in 2010; brothers and sister-in-law, James and Naomi Cuff, and Donald Shue.

A funeral service for Margaret will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2014, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in New London, with Rev. Greg Watling officiating. Family and friends may call directly at church from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Hortonville.The family would like to thank the staffs at the Washington Center, Marion Heights, St. Joseph’s Residence and the New London Family Medical Center.
