Inmate charged with battery

A Portage County safekeeper inmate at the Waupaca County jail is accused of injuring a corrections officer.

Joshua J. Fair, 20, Stevens Point, is charged with felony battery by a prisoner.

According to the criminal complaint, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Susan Deruchowski and three other corrections officers entered Fair’s cell on Aug. 26 after he covered the door and window with paper towels so they could not see inside.

Once inside, the officers reported they found the floor flooded in water and Fair on the top bunk.

When Deruchowski and another officer tried to secure Fair, he kicked Deruchowski hard enough to knock her into the wall and injure her, the complaint says.

Fair was serving a 95-day sentence for theft. He is now residing at the jail in Portage County, where he faces two more charges of theft.
