Hathaway to discuss Obamacare

Dr. Bill Hathaway will offer an update on the Affordable Care Act at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Hosted by Winchester Academy, the program is free and open to the public.

Signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010, the Affordable Care Act represents the most significant regulatory overhaul of the U.S. health care system since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.

The ACA was enacted with the goal of expanding the affordability, quality and availability of private and public health insurance through consumer protections, regulations, subsidies, taxes, insurance exchanges and other reforms.

Hathaway is chief medical officer at Mission Health in Asheville, South Carolina. He will touch on changes in health care systems and delivery since implementation of the ACA and will bring the audience up-to-date about the law’s effects on individuals. He will examine the subject from two perspectives, that of a practicing cardiologist and a hospital administrator.

Hathaway joined Asheville Cardiology Associates in 1999. Following his premedical education in biology from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, he obtained a medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and then completed his internship and residency at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He later served as chief resident at Duke.

Prior to being named chief medical officer at Mission Health, Hathaway served as Medial Director at LaSalle Heart and Lung Center in Appleton.

Hathaway is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. His professional societies include fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Buncombe County Medical Society.

Programs are funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations. Dr. Hathaway’s program is sponsored by Mary Ellen Boario.
