Waupaca improves to 7-0

It’s still early in the season, but the Waupaca Area girls’ hockey team is already making plenty of noise in the Great Northern Conference.

The team improved to 3-0 in conference play and 7-0 overall with wins over Medford and Stevens Point Wisconsin Rapids at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center. Waupaca Area handed Medford a 12-2 loss Dec. 8 and picked up a 6-2 win Dec. 4 over Point/Rapids.

Mandy Tomlinson and Markie Ash scored four goals each in a win over the Raiders, while Brianne Huettner finished with a team-high six assists.

Waupaca Area scored six goals in the first period and added three more in the second and third. Avery Simonson added two goals, while Jamie Slattery and Huettner found the net once.

Katarina Otter and Tomlinson had three assists each, while Slattery added two and Ash and McKenna Schultz chipped in with one each.

Waupaca Area outshot Medford 50-18 and goalie Cassie Rasmussen finished with 16 saves.

Waupaca Area 6, Point/Rapids 2

Point Rapids kept Ash from scoring, but didn’t have an answer for Tomlinson, who finished with four goals.

Otter and Christina Rasmussen also scored for Waupaca Area.

Ash and Huettner had two assists, while Simonson and Rasmussen added one each.

Waupaca Area will head to Milwaukee to play three games over the weekend. The team will face University School at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, before taking on Brookfield at noon and Stoughton at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.
