Shoplifting arrest becomes narcotics charge

Bryan M. Szabo, 20, Franksville, is charged with possession of narcotics.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, Waupaca Police Officer Paul Benzschawel was dispatched to Fleet Farm in response to a shoplifting complaint.

Benzschawel spoke with the store’s loss prevention officer, who said he saw Szabo conceal a pair of gloves in the hood of his sweatshirt and attempt to leave the store without paying for them.

Benzschawel cited Szabo for retail theft, as an ordinance violation and not as a criminal offense, and took him into custody.

According to the criminal complaint, a small plastic bag fell out of Szabo’s boot while he was changing his clothes at the county jail. The bag had three pills that were identified as Oxycodone.

Szabo denied that the pills were his and said he had purchased the boots the prior day.
