Auditions slated for Waupaca production of ‘Into the Woods’

The Waupaca Community Theatre will hold auditions for its 2015 musical production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into The Woods” from 4-8 p.m. on both Sunday and Monday, Dec. 28 and 29, at the Waupaca High School Performing Arts Center.

An ambivalent Cinderella, a bloodthirsty Little Red Ridinghood, a Prince Charming with a roving eye and a witch who raps are among the characters in this award-winning Broadway musical.

When a baker and his wife learn they have been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door, they embark on a quest for special objects required to break the spell.

They swindle, lie and steal from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (of Beanstalk fame).

The wishes of everyone are  granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results.

What begins as a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories people tell their children.

The large, multi-generational cast includes: Narrator, Cinderella, Jack, Baker, Baker’s Wife, Cinderella’s Stepmother, Stepsisters Lucinda and Florinda, Jack’s Mother, Little Red Ridinghood, Witch, Cinderella’s Father, Cinderella’s Mother, Mysterious Man, Little Red’s Grandmother, Wolf, Rapunzel, Cinderella’s Prince, Rapunzel’s Prince, Royal Steward, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and a female-voiced role of the Giant. There are not roles for students younger than high school age for this production.

Those auditioning should prepare a song preferably from a broadway musical such as “Into The Woods” and have Monday through Thursday evenings free in June and July.

“Into The Woods” will have six performances at the WHS Performing Arts Center on July 24-26 and July 30 to Aug. 1.
John Kelley will direct “Into The Woods.”

In addition to directing WCT productions of “Sweeney Todd,” “Little Women,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and the original “Into The Woods,” Kelley has conducted a number of musicals and has played drums/percussion in the pit orchestras of several broadway shows in New York City.

Musical numbers from the show include: No One Is Alone, Children Will Listen, Giants In The Sky, It Takes Two, Agony, Maybe They’re Magic, I Know Things Now, Moments In The Woods, Your Fault, A Very Nice Prince, Stay With Me, Any Moment, No More and Our Little World.

The Waupaca Community Theatre is a division of the Waupaca Fine Arts Festival.
