Swenson joins Waupaca chamber

The Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce hired Mitchell Swenson as the vice president of tourism. 

Swenson is an area native, growing up and living in the Scandinavia community all his life. 

He graduated from Iola-Scandinavia High School and earned an associate’s degree in computer information systems from Fox Valley Technical College.

Prior to joining the chamber, Swenson joins worked for the Iola Old Car Show as the public relations and marketing director. He is a former employee of H.O. Wolding and the Waupaca Foundry, where he spent nearly 16 years in information technology.

Swenson also worked with Waupaca County Farm Technology Days, and has served on committees with the Scandinavia Lutheran Church and as chairman of the Scandinavia Corn Roast.

In his new role he will be responsible for all promotion and events related to making Waupaca a visitor’s destination. This includes the O’so Pond Hockey Tournament, Strawberry Fest, Hometown Day Celebration and the Chain O’Lakes Blues Festival. 

He will also oversee advertising to draw visitors, focusing on hiking, biking and paddling enthusiasts, as well as business travelers,

“I’m jumping right in,” Swenson said. “I look forward to working with the Chamber’s Tourism Council and all of the local business owners and managers.” 

Swenson notes that tourism is the third largest industry in Wisconsin and that it is vital to maintain the Waupaca area’s thriving tourism sector.

“Mitch’s background is perfect as our tourism director,” according to chamber President Terri Schulz. “Mitch knows the Waupaca area and knows many business people in the area, he has first-hand knowledge of events and knows what visitors are looking for in a travel destination. Economic development is a strong goal of the Chamber’s and tourism is a driving force in our area in economic development. We are excited to have Mitch as a part of our team.”
