Comets fifth, Wolves 11th

Three first-place finishes helped Waupaca’s wrestling team place fifth Jan. 3 at the Manawa Invitational.

Meanwhile, Manawa placed 11th at the 16-team tournament.

Logan Bernhardt, Mitchell Rotta and Vince Ellie won championships at 120, 160 and 182 pounds, respectively, for Waupaca. Blake Thoe took third at 285, Guy Tessen finished fourth at 126 and Derrick Rotta took fifth at 170.

Jake Kaczorowski (220) and Cole Thompson (285) placed second for Manawa, while Zack Johnson took third at 145 and Jordan Kons placed fifth at 195.

Team scores were Oconto (181), New Prague, Minn., (144), Pittsville (143), Antigo (130), Waupaca (128.5), Lakeland (126), Wabeno (112), Winneconne (104.5), Onalaska Luther (76), Marathon (75), Manawa (74), Elcho (45), Manitowoc Lutheran/Manitowoc Roncalli (39), Plainfield Tri-County (39), Appleton Xavier/Menasha St. Mary Central (26).

Waupaca will return to the Eastern Valley Conference by hosting Clintonville at 6:30 tonight (Thursday, Jan. 8).

Waupaca and Manawa will also compete at invitationals Saturday, Jan. 10. Waupaca will head to New London for the Bulldog Cutler Classic, while Manawa will travel to Neillsville.
