It wasn’t pretty, but the Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team was able to hold off Amherst Dec. 9 for a 44-30 win in a matchup of Central Wisconsin 8 Confernce teams.
The visiting Thunderbirds outscored Amherst 18-10 in the first quarter and took a 25-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Amherst opened the second half with baskets from Maizie Berry and Jennifer Felckowski and cut the lead to 25-10, but never got any closer, as the T-Birds led 31-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kelsey Holderman hit a pair of free throws for Amherst that trimmed the T-Birds’ lead to 39-30, but I-S sealed the win from the free-throw line.
Leighten Fischer led the T-Birds with 13 points, while Brooke Phillips added 12 and Kylie Johnson finished with nine. Becca Glicinski led Amherst with eight points.
