Pacelli hands Manawa 36-30 loss

Stevens Point Pacelli handed Manawa a 36-30 loss Jan. 9 in a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference girls’ basketball matchup.

Thirty-two turnovers hurt the Wolves, as well as converting only eight of 21 free-throw attempts.

The Wolves held the Cardinals to eight points in the first half, but were outscored 28-14 in the second half.

Ashlee Strebe scored six of her team-high 13 points to help the Wolves take an 8-4 lead into the second quarter despite nine turnovers. Pacelli had trouble with Manawa’s zone defense, as the Wolves forced 11 turnovers. Brogan Bartel’s free throw with 1:27 left in the first half gave Manawa its biggest lead at 16-6.

The Wolves took a 16-8 lead into the locker room at halftime, but Pacelli quickly grabbed the momentum in the second half with a 4-0 run and were within four points – 16-12 – with 4:40 left in the third quarter. Strebe ended the run with a basket and the Wolves took a 21-18 lead into the final period.

Sami Kay Shafranski keyed Pacelli’s 7-0 run to open the fourth quarter and the Cardinals led 25-21 with 5:39 to play. Bartel’s putback ended the Cardinals’ run and Strebe’s basket with 2:17 left gave Manawa a 28-27 lead.

Shafranski drained two free throws to regain the lead, but Bartel gave the Wolves their last lead, 30-29. Pacelli would finish the final minute by making seven of eight free throws while holding Manawa scoreless.

Shafranski led Pacelli with 14 points. Strebe also grabbed seven rebounds for Manawa. Bartel added eight points and led all rebounders with 12, including nine on the offensive end.

The Wolves will host Shiocton at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.
