Bonduel hands Iola-Scandinavia a 67-52 defeat

A three-team race for first place in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference boys’ basketball standings is down to two.

Two of those teams met Jan. 23, with Bonduel handing Iola-Scandinavia a 67-52 defeat. The other team – Amherst – remained in first with a 57-35 win over Manawa. The standings may have changed since those games were played, however, as Bonduel and Amherst played Jan. 27.

I-S also picked up a 62-40 nonconference win Jan. 20 over Wisconsin Valley Lutheran.

Bonduel 67, I-S 52

BONDUEL – The Thunderbirds did not have an answer for Colton Dobratz, who led all scorers with 24 points, including 10 in the second quarter alone that helped the Bears take a 29-23 halftime lead.

Bonduel added to its lead with an 18-16 advantage in the third quarter before outscoring the visitors 20-13 in the final period.

Kristian Welch and Alec Lund led the T-Birds with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Peyton Czarapata and Connor Rosin added 12 each for Bonduel.

The Bears improved to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the CWC-8 with the win, while the T-Birds fell to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

I-S 62, WVL 40

Braiden Garbe and Zach Mortenson scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, in a win over the Wolves.

The T-Birds outscored the visitors 21-10 in the first quarter, 18-10 in the second, 8-7 in the third and 15-13 in the fourth.

Branson Witucki led WVL with 23 points.

The T-Birds hosted Wittenberg-Birnamwood Jan. 27 and will head to Stevens Point Pacelli Friday, Jan. 30, for a CWC-8 rematch with the Cardinals and James Gollon, who is averaging nearly 31 points a game this season.

I-S also has upcoming home games against Rosholt Tuesday, Feb. 3, and Shiocton Friday, Feb. 6. Tipoff for both contests is set for 7:30 p.m.
