Rice publishes second book

Mary Ann Rice, of Iola, recently published her second book, “Bergene.”

The book consists of true family stories of George and Karen Bergen, as remembered by their son Arnold Leroy Bergen.

Rice revised and edited her uncle’s original manuscript, which was dictated to a family member in the 1960s.

With a series of short stories, “Bergene” provides a day-to-day insight of family life, laughter and sorrow in the early 1900s.

“Arnold had a special knack for remembering happenings,” Rice said. “Part of that might be a Norwegian thing, but I think it is his onset of blindness in later years that brings out the memories and the storytelling in a strong and enjoyable fashion.”

To purchase a copy of “Bergene,” call Rice at 715-445-2501.

The book will also be available at the Iola Winter Carnival’s Indoor Craft Show from 1-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Iola-Scandinavia High School.

The “Local Norwegian Authors” table includes books by Enid Cleaves, Don and Lanna Langdok, Dr. Lowell Peterson, Patricia Williams, Palmer Myhra, Scott Emmert, Roselyn Staples and Mary Ann Rice.
