Council approves garbage contract

Harter’s Fox Valley Disposal will begin picking up residential garbage and recycling in the city of Weyauwega next month.

That is after the Weyauwega Common Council approved a contract with the company during its Monday, Feb. 16, meeting.

The contract will be effective March 1, 2015, through Dec. 31, 2016, with the agreement including an option for a third year, under the city’s discretion.

“With the contract, Harter’s only pick up will be on Tuesday. They will pick everything up on Tuesday,” City Administrator Patrick Wetzel told the council.

Tuesday, March 3, will be the first day of residential garbage pick up in the city.

Currently, Graichen Sanitation picks up half of the residential garbage on Tuesday and the other half on Thursday, so the one day pick up of residential garbage in the city will be a change for residents.

Wetzel said the city will seek to educate residents about the changes in multiple ways, including notices in the Waupaca County Post, a mailing and information on the city’s website.

In addition to garbage pick up one day of the week, residents will also have to place their garbage and recycling at the curb a bit earlier.

The company will pick up residential garbage and recycling from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Residents will be responsible for having their items placed at the end of their driveways by 6 a.m. that day.

Wetzel said Harter’s Fox Valley Disposal will drive from Seymour to Weyauwega on Tuesdays to pick up residential garbage and will then take the residential garbage directly to the Outagamie County Landfill.

That means the city will know exactly how much residential waste is leaving the city, Wetzel said.

Harter’s Fox Valley Disposal will provide that information to the city on a quarterly basis, he said.

Large household items will be collected by Harter’s on the third Thursday of the month.

Residents will be responsible for contacting Harter’s to schedule such a pick up, and pre-payment will be required before Harter’s picks up such items.

Wetzel said recyclables are slated to be picked up on the last Tuesday of every month, similar to the current schedule.

Recyclables are to be placed in secured containers and may be mixed together.

Segments of cardboard are not to exceed three feet in length.

If a holiday falls on a Monday or Tuesday, residential garbage will then be picked up on the Wednesday of that week.

When a holiday falls on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, the regular pick up day of Tuesday will remain the same for residents.

The monthly garbage rate will be $8, and the monthly recycling rate will be $2.46 per home.
