Pete and Joe placed on ice

New London Fish and Game Club members Roger Kruger, Barry Halsey and Dale Sternhagen pushed a boat out onto the ice Tuesday containing “Pete” and “Joe,” the official ice out ambassadors of New London.

The two makeshift manikins have been placed out onto the ice since the 1950s.

Their boat is affixed with a string on a clock. When the boat floats out with the ice, the string pulls and stops the clock recording the official ice out time.

Ice out records have been kept on the Wolf River at New London since 1851. The earliest ice out was Feb. 28, 1998 and the latest was April 21 in 1856.

Dale Sternhagen said Tuesday, “After being out there today, I don’t think it’s going to hang in there much longer.” Last year the Pete and Joe went out on April 3.
