Rooftop burglaries in Waupaca

March 16, 2015

Waupaca police are investigating two rooftop burglaries that occurred Friday, March 13, on the 100 block of North Main Street.

Chief Tim Goke said someone made entry into a downtown business through an access hatch to the mechanical units on the roof.

The suspect entered the business, then attempted unsuccessfully to break into the cash register.

Goke said the building’s alarm was tripped around 8 a.m., which may have interrupted the suspect’s efforts to force open the cash register.

“Nothing was actually taken,” Goke said.

A similar attempt was made to break into another downtown building through its roof. The suspect was unable to gain further access to the business.

Noting that there are a number of apartments above Main Street stores, Goke said, “Once you get on top of one building you pretty much have access to the entire block.”

Goke asked downtown businesses to check the security of their buildings, paying close attention to their rooftop access.
