NL soccer team ready to compete

Last year’s 6-3-1 Bay Conference record was nice, but the New London soccer team are pushing to improve on that mark this year as they return 10 players from last season’s team.

Seniors Marina Solberg and Maddie Sanderfoot both earned Second Team All-Bay Conference honors last year, while fellow senior Emma Davidson earned Honorable Mention All-Bay Conference. They will be joined by seniors Alexis Meshke, Maddie Schroeder and Brittany Zehner to help lead the team this year.

Juniors Victoria Blum and Kassy Hoewisch both have two years of varsity experience, while Sophomores Autumn Kloehn and Kristin Evers return to the varsity team after earning playing time last year.

Other Varsity candidates include seniors Lorena Castanho-Abtunes and Ruby Fortuno; juniors Marie Wohlrabe, Kasey Pinch, Macy Madsen, Lili Gould, and Iciar Murrieta-Perez; sophomores Elizabeth Tank, Amanda Martinez, and Alison Glynn; and freshmen Sarah Vigil, Josie Tuchscherer, Sailor Thompson, Margaret Tews, Morgan Spoehr, Ellie Madsen, Shania Krake, McKenzie Guyette, Melany Gerhartz, and Erika Dorow.

The Bulldogs lost Holly Boyce, Kayla Casey, Madison Cooley, Maddie Fields, Alexis Messina, and Jenna Taylor to graduation last spring.

“This team should finish the year with a winning record. We have a good mix of players all way from our seniors and our freshman,” said Head Coach Joe Messina, who is in his fourth year coaching the team. “We are looking to be a strong defensive squad led by Maddie Sanderfoot and Elizabeth Tank. Offensively, we should see quite a few more goals than last year with Emma Davidson and Marina Solberg leading the way.

“With this team, we should finish towards the top of conference,” added Messina. “This year’s conference matches should be very competitive with no team really standing out. This team has a lot of heart and should be able to grind out some wins.”
