Waupaca man charged with child sex crimes

Cameron E. Mentzel, 20, Waupaca, was charged with four counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child and one count of repeated sexual assault of a child.

On Nov. 24, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Krueger was dispatched to a home in Little Wolf, where he spoke to a woman who accused Mentzel of sexually assaulting her 13-year-old daughter.

According to the criminal complaint, the woman said Mentzel had been banned from their home for several years when the girl, who was then 5 or 6, complained that Mentzel had touched her inappropriately.

Detective Sgt. Julie Thobaben and a child forensic specialist with the Child Advocacy Center in Green Bay interviewed the girl on Dec. 2.

The girl told investigators that the first time Mentzel sexually assaulted her was before she learned to tie her own shoes. She said Mentzel sexually assaulted her as recently as Nov. 24, the complaint says.

On the recommendation of Assistant District Atorney Veronica Isherwood, Judge Vicki Clussman set a $250,000 cash bond. Mentzel currently remains in custody.
