Brost joins Common Council

A new member was welcomed to the Manawa Common Council at its reorganizational meeting on Tuesday, April 21.

Richard Brost will represent the 3rd Ward. He was sworn in by City Clerk Cheryl Hass.

Also taking oaths of office were Mayor John Smith and alderperson Alice M. Brown, representing the 2nd Ward. Not present was Jake Timm, who will represent the 1st Ward.

Smith, Brown and Timm were on the ballot in the April 7 spring election. Brost was a write-in.

The council then approved the mayoral appointments for 2015-16.

Mike Frazier was selected as council president.

Smith talked about everything the council has accomplished since he was first elected mayor two years ago.

“Two years ago, none of us knew what to expect,” he said. “It is tremendously rewarding to see what can happen when we all work together. We have a lot to be proud of in the city.”

“None of us come out here with personal agendas,” said Alderman Mike Miller.

“All of us do this because we love the city,” Frazier said. “We leave our egos at home.”

“We as a council have learned to trust the city employees to do their job, and to also ask questions,” Smith said.

Hass encouraged the council members to attend government meeting classes and to also be certified to serve on the board of review.
