Kindergartners learn about fire safety

The Weyauwega Fire Department has an annual Smokey the Bear with Backpack program with the local kindergarten classes.

Smokey the Bear goes home with each student in a backpack. It includes the story of Smokey the Bear as a way to promote fire safety.

The program is timed to run in the spring to help raise awareness before the wildland fire season begins.

Each student also receives a Smokey the Bear coloring book.

When Smokey finishes visiting each family, by random draw, a few students get to take him and the backpack home to keep.

This year’s winners are Rylee Timm and Mason McIvor, who are both students at Weyauwega Elementary, and Annamarie Miller, who is a student at St. Peter Lutheran School.
