Mom’s Morning Run to benefit cancer patients

The third annual Mom’s Morning Run/Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Elm Valley Acres, E2451 Shady Drive, Scandinavia.

All proceeds will be donated to Friends of St. Vincent at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, to be used toward patient care in the gynecological oncology department.

“We do this event to honor our mom,” said Ruth Bartel, who helps organize the run/walk with her sisters Ronda Neidert and Rachel Jensen.

Their mother, Phyllis Bartel, passed away of uterine cancer in February of 2013.

“The care St. Vincent’s gave our mom made the process much easier for our family, and we hope to be able to help other families in the same way,” Jensen said.

“This event is something my mom would have loved being a part of,” Bartel said. “It is a fun, very relaxed event, with many children and families being involved. And in the end, we are helping others, even if in a small way.”

Last year, the event raised more than $5,000, which the Bartel family asked St. Vincent’s to use toward gift cards for prescriptions needed for those who had financial difficulties purchasing the medications.

The event will be held rain or shine. Participants may walk or run any length of the three miles. Dogs on leashes will be allowed and strollers will also be allowed. Bicycles will not allowed.

A minimum donation of $10 is requested.

Preregistration will be from 1-4 p.m. Friday, May 8. On the day of the event, registration with be from 7:15-8:15 a.m., with the run/walk beginning at 8:30 a.m.
