WHS math team places third

The Waupaca High School math team was awarded third place in the Central Wisconsin Mathematics League.

Composed of area high schools, the teams are divided into four classes according to enrollment. Each school team is composed 12 students with four enrolled in geometry, four in advanced algebra and four in advanced math.

Math team coach Dale Feldt said these students are viewed as the top of their class. The students travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point three times a year to compete.

The Waupaca team was in fifth place going into the third meet. The students needed to make up a 60 point deficit going into the last meet just to get to third place.

“The extra study time these kids put in paid off and they were able to tie for third,” Feldt said.

Ryan Weise, advanced math team member, had the second highest cumulative score of the 60 students in the central Wisconsin division. He received a plaque for his accomplishments.

Ryan Hemmiln, Cole Pankratz, Ryan Phillipsen and Rob Durfee received Certificates of Excellence for scoring in the top 10 percent in their categories.
