T-Birds sweep Bonduel

Iola-Scandinavia’s softball team wrapped up Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play May 14 with a doubleheader sweep over Bonduel.

The Thunderbirds outscored the Bears 14-8 and 14-5. The team also fell to Shiocton 6-1 May 11, beat Amherst 15-2 the following day and swept a nonconference doubleheader May 16 at Markesan to improve to 20-5 on the season.

I-S 14, Bonduel 8

IOLA – Iola-Scandinavia started slow, but broke open a 4-3 game with five runs in the fourth inning.

Kendall Johnson went the distance to earn the win on the mound. She allowed nine hits and three walks while striking out seven batters.

Jane Oligney led the T-Birds with five hits, including a double, while driving in two runs. Brianne Huettner and Brooklyn Podgorny each had three hits and Podgorny had a double and drove in two runs. Brooke Phillips had two hits and drove in three runs, including a two-run home run in the fourth. Johnson also had a double.

I-S 14, Bonduel 5

IOLA – The T-Birds scored in all six innings played for a 14-5 win over Bonduel to complete the doubleheader sweep. The game was stopped in the seventh inning due to darkness.

Huettner allowed six hits and six walks while striking out seven batters to get the win.

Kaylin Ellioff had four hits and drove in three runs; Kylie Johnson and Huettner had two doubles on three hits and drove in three and two runs, respectively; Johnson had a two-run home run in the fifth; and Phillips and Jane Oligney had two hits, including a double for Phillips and two for Oligney.

Shiocton 6, I-S 1

IOLA – Leaving runners on base cost I-S a chance to pick up a win over the Chiefs.

The T-Birds stranded nine runners and left the bases loaded in the first inning and two more runners left in the third, fourth and fifth.

Kendall Johnson allowed 10 hits and five walks while striking out four batters.

Jayden Podgorny, Phillips and Huettner had two of the T-Birds’ eight hits. Phillips had a double in the first that drove in the only run.

I-S 15, Amherst 2 (5 inn.)

IOLA – The T-Birds scored 11 runs on six hits in the first inning and also took advantage of some Falcon miscues.

Kendall Johnson pitched the first two innings to earn the win. She allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three batters. Huettner pitched the third and fourth innings, while Phillips pitched the final inning. Huettner allowed one walk, while Phillips allowed two hits and one walk and had one strikeout.

Phillips had three hits, including a three-run home run over the left-field fence in the second inning. Kylie Johnson, Ellioff and Jessica Faldet had two hits. Johnson had a leadoff home run over the left-field fence in the first inning and a two-run double in the second and Faldet drove in three runs on her two hits.

I-S 6, Markesan 0

MARKESAN – Phillips had two hits and drove in all six runs in 6-0 shutout victory over the Hornets.

Phillips hit a solo home run in the first inning a followed that up with grand slam home run in the second.

She drove in the final run when she grounded out in the seventh to score Jayden Podgorny from third base.

Kendall Johnson allowed six hits and no walks and had six strikeouts to get the win.

Huettner, Oligney and Ellioff each had two of the T-Birds’ nine hits.

I-S 11, Markesan 1 (6 inn.)

MARKESAN – I-S scored in each inning to complete the sweep.

Huettner went the distance to get the win, allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out three batters.

Jayden Podgorny, Phillips and Kendall Johnson each had two hits. Phillips drove in four runs, with two of them coming on her third home run of the day in the fifth inning. Huettner added a two-run home run in the second.

The T-Bird junior varsity team managed to get in only two of its six scheduled games for the week. The Thunderbirds picked up 31-0 and 6-2 wins May 15 at Bowler to improve to 9-5-1 on the season.

The JV team will wrap up the season at home at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, against P.J. Jacobs of Stevens Point and hosting Tri-County for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday, May 22.

The varsity team will wrap up the regular season at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Assumption in Wisconsin Rapids.

The T-Birds will then begin WIAA regional tournament play Tuesday, May 26, or Wednesday, May 27. Tournament bracket information for softball will be released today and the pairings can be found on the WIAA website, www.wiaawi.org.
