Three area softball teams get top seeds

Three area teams have received No. 1 seeds for the WIAA softball tournament, which gets under way Tuesday, May 26, with regional matchups in divisions 2-4 and Wednesday, May 27, in Division 1.

Hortonville, New London and Weyauwega-Fremont are top-seeded teams in divisions 1, 2 and 3, respectively, and all three teams have a bye in the first round.

Division 1

Hortonville has a bye in the first round and will host No. 8 Appleton North or No. 9 Neenah at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 29. The sectional final is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4, in Ashwaubenon.

Division 2

New London will open tournament play at 4:30 p.m. May 27 by hosting No. 4 Xavier or No. 5 Fox Valley Lutheran.

In other May 26 matchups, No. 6 Waupaca will play at No. 3 Wrightstown and No. 7 Clintonville will head to No. 2 Shawano.

The sectional final will be held at 4:30 p.m. June 4 in Shawano.

Division 3

Weyauwega-Fremont has a bye in the first round and will host No. 4 Lourdes Academy or No. 5 Amherst May 27. If W-F plays Lourdes, the game will start at 4 p.m. If the Indians host Amherst, first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

No. 2 Iola-Scandinavia also has a first-round by and will host No. 3 Shiocton or No. 6 St. Mary Central May 27.

The sectional final will be played at 5 p.m. June 4 in Marathon City.

Division 4

May 26 first-round games involving area teams are No. 5 Manawa at No. 4 Bowler, No. 4 Wild Rose vs. No. 5 Port Edwards, No. 3 Almond-Bancroft vs. No. 6 Pittsville and No. 7 Marion at No. 2 Tigerton.

The sectional final is scheduled for 5 p.m. June 4 in Athens.

Teams that advance to state will compete Thursday to Saturday, June 11-13, at Goodman Diamond in Madison.
