Comets pick up two wins

Waupaca’s softball team closed out the regular season with recent home wins over Ripon and Amherst.

The Comets wrapped up Eastern Valley Conference play May 21 with a 22-7 win over Ripon and handed Amherst a 10-3 loss May 19.

Waupaca 22, Ripon 7 (5 inn.)

Mandy Tomlinson had four of Waupaca’s 19 hits and drove in a game-high five runs to help lead the Comets over the Tigers.

Ripon put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning, but Waupaca answered with four in the first, four in the second, one in the third and 13 in the fourth.

Markie Ash and Victoria Nowak added three hits each for Waupaca, while Brenna Oleson, Bobbi Sue Sell and winning pitcher Alyssa Engebretson had two each. Nowak drove in three runs, while Ash and Sell knocked in a pair.

Waupaca 10, Amherst 3

Engebretson scattered four hits and Oleson had two triples for Waupaca in a nonconference win over the Falcons.

Waupaca came from behind, as Amherst scored twice in the top of the first inning. Waupaca tied the game in the first and took the lead for good with three runs in the second. Amherst scored a run in the third, but Waupaca scored once in the third, once in the fourth and three times in the sixth.

Oleson drove in a team-high three runs, while Ash and Caroline Ogden had two of Waupaca’s 11 hits.

Waupaca opened WIAA state tournament play May 26 with a Division 2 regional quarterfinal in Wrightstown. If the Comets won, they would have played at Freedom or hosted Little Chute May 27.
