Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia ended the season for the Waupaca girls’ soccer team June 4 by handing the Comets a 2-1 overtime loss in a Division 3 regional semifinal.

Waupaca also wrapped up the regular season June 2 with a 5-0 loss at Hortonville.

Amherst/I-S 2, Waupaca 1 (OT)
WAUPACA – Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia’s Rowen Kilawee broke a 1-1 tie two minutes into the overtime period off of an assist from Becca Glisczinski.

Waupaca’s Maleva Butkiewicz had opened the scoring 20 minutes into the game with an unassisted goal, but Rachel Dombrowski tied the game by converting a penalty kick at the 72-minute mark.

“The team played well, but got some bad breaks,” coach Mark Polebitski said. “A penalty kick with one minute left to go in the game could have sealed it, but the Amherst keeper (Lauryn Branham) made a save on a hard, low shot from Maleva.

“We scored to tie it up with less than one minute left to go in the game, but it was called back for offsides,” he said. “I could not quite figure out the call because two Amherst players were on the endline. Amber (VanHandel) had a breakaway during regulation that just missed wide.”

Waupaca goalkeeper Taylor Korth finished with 15 saves, while Branham stopped 12 shots.

“Taylor did a nice job keeping us in the game,” Polebitski said. “She made all the routine saves and some great athletic saves as well. The girls played hard for 110 minutes. It was a hard-fought high school soccer match.”

Hortonville 5, Waupaca 0
HORTONVILLE – Ella Metten scored twice for the Polar Bears in a nonconference win. Hortonville outshot the Comets 27-2.
