Flag Day in Iola

June 17, 2015
A rifle squad with the American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 participated in Flag Day ceremonies in Iola. Richard LaChapelle was one of many members of the Patriot Guard Riders that participated in the Flag Day ceremonies in Iola. Ruth Buchholz (left) along with her daughters Sarah Smith (center) and Chris Anthony (right) attended the dedicate of the new Gold Star Recipients Memorial in Iola. Buchholz's first husband, Elroy Olson, who served in the United States Army, was killed on Nov. 14, 1944, during World War II, and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Surrounding the Gold Star Recipients Memorial unveiled during Flag Day ceremonies at Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 Memorial Park were (from left) veterans Jim Waid, James Jolly and John Black. A plaque on the memorial read, "All gave some, some gave all." The memorial was dedicated in memory of all who proudly served and protected our country.
