Iola-Scandinavia’s Zach Mortenson finished in the top 20 in Division 3 at the WIAA Boys’ State Golf Meet, held June 8-9 at University Ridge Golf Course.

Mortenson tied with Mishicot’s Austin Schnell and Pardeeville’s Nathan Satina for 16th place after the three golfers finished with a two-day score of 169.

“Zach played well and barely missed many birdie opportunities,” coach Alan Bauer said. “He finished tied for 22nd (on the first day) out of 52 Division 3 individuals. He shot an 87 on the first day and an 82 on the second day.”

Mortenson qualified for state by winning a five-person playoff at the Wabeno/Laona Sectional.

“It was a long day, as he finished early and had to wait about four hours for the playoff,” Bauer said. “He played well and had the great opportunity to advance to state.”

Mortenson enjoyed his experience at University Ridge, according to Bauer.

“Zach enjoyed many of the golfers he was grouped with and had a great time,” he said. “It is an impressive atmosphere for golf with good crowds following the players. Zach looks forward to attempting to get back to the tournament again next year. He knows that he will have to continue to work hard and keep competing on a regular basis.”
