City obligated to maintain road

Reader questions Clintonville’s indecision about Airport RoadAfter reading about the city of Clintonville’s indecision about Airport Road, I have some thoughts to consider.

I just drove on Airport Road and find that speed limit would have no effect at all. I could not drive faster than 25-30 mph on the south end of the road. Who would police a speed limit there anyway. Our police department has better things to do with their time.

This summer and next will see more traffic on Airport Road when Main Street is closed for reconstruction. People will be using Airport Road as an alternate detour.

Also, a weight limit does make sense. If a loaded truck breaks through, you will wish that you had repaired it. Just a couple of years ago someone broke through on the north end and the town of Matteson was strapped with the cost of repair.

Finally, on the subject of who is responsible for what part of the road. I was told many years ago from a town chairman that the property owners would face each other on the property line and the portion to his right would be his half of the property line to maintain. This would apply to farmers maintaining fences or townships or counties with boundary roads.

Notice where county lines use a common road, the signs are at the center and you will notice a difference in the pavement. I think the city council needs to check this out.

I feel the city has an obligation to maintain Airport Road for safe travel.
