Trooper found him by damaged car on roundabout

A New London man whom police found after he damaged his car by jumping two curbs at the State Highway 22/54 roundabout in Waupaca has been charged with felony drunken driving.

James A. Coyle, 56, is charged with his sixth offense of operating while intoxicated.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, Wisconsin State Trooper Jim Binder was westbound on State 22/54 when he saw a blue Jeep Compass with two flat tires stopped at the State 22/54 north to east roundabout entrance.

Binder approached a man who was standing next to the Jeep and suggested he return to his vehicle for safety reasons.

The man, identified as Coyle, suggested Binder arrest him because he was going to jail, according to the criminal complaint.

A subsequent preliminary breath test indicated Coyle had a 0.25 blood-alcohol level, which is more than three times the legal limit.
