Polar Bears place second at invite

Hortonville girls swing into golf season

By Scott Bellile

The Polar Bear girls’ golf team showed it’s already in the swing of things with a second place finish at its season opener in Seymour on Friday, Aug. 14.

Hortonville’s team score of 362 wasn’t enough to take down Thunder Invitational winner Fox Valley Lutheran (350), but the Polar Bears outperformed 14 teams including De Pere (367), Green Bay Preble (375) and Marinette (377).

Two Hortonville golfers, sophomore Bree Downie and senior Chloe Crusan, placed in the top 10 and earned medals. Downie finished seventh with
a score of 86 on Crystal Springs Golf Club’s par 72 course and Crusan placed ninth with an 88.

Junior Abby Nelson finished with a 93 and senior Abbey Karns hit a 95.

Crusan, who was last fall’s Fox Valley Association Female Golfer of the Year, Downie, Nelson and Karns are all returning starters for the fall 2015 golf season.

“The outlook for the season looks very positive,” head coach Kathy Kiger said.

Players Kiger expects to to make contributions are Emily Groebner, Cara Byom, Halle Kalwitz, Taylor Kalwitz and Trisha Walters. Newcomers are Bailey Schernick, Maddie Quinn and Anna Schmidt.

The girls’ second competition of the season at Lakeshore Golf Course hosted by Oshkosh West has been rescheduled due to rain. That event was moved from Aug. 17 to Wednesday, Aug. 26.
