A Wisconsin Rapids man with three pending felony cases in Wood County, including an eighth charge of drunken driving, was arrested in Waupaca after allegedly hiding under a porch.

Shawn R. Curtin, 42, is charged in Waupaca County with felony drunken driving, obstructing an officer and three counts of felony bail jumping.

At 2:18 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, Waupaca Police Officer Brent Krueger turned north onto Franklin Street from West Fulton Street where he saw a group of people in the road. It appeared they were about to become involved in a fight.

When they saw Krueger’s squad car approaching, two of the men ran off in opposite directions.

The three people who remained at the scene told Krueger that the man who fled east on Center Street had pushed one of the women in the group and exposed his genitals.

As a black pickup truck drove through the intersection of Center and Franklin streets, they said that was the man who had fled.

According to the criminal complaint, the truck completely circled the block, then pulled into a driveway. Krueger saw a man in a white T-shirt jump out of the truck and run.

Krueger pursued the man and found him hiding under a porch on the 400 block of Center Street.

Sgt. John Helgeson arrived to assist with the arrest. The man reportedly told the officers his name was Tom and gave a last name that he was unable to spell correctly.

The people who lived at the home, where the officers found the man hiding, identified him as Curtin. They also said he had taken their black pickup truck without their permission.

When they contacted dispatch, the officers learned Curtin had several warrants for his arrest. Wood County authorities had flagged Curtin as a flight risk and dangerous to law enforcement.

Curtin is currently being held at Waupaca County jail after Judge Vicki Clussman ordered a $20,000 cash bail.

On Jan. 12, Curtin appeared in Wood County Circuit Court on a felony charge of substantial battery and was released on a $2,000 signature bond.

On April 20, Curtin appeared in Wood County Circuit Court on charges of false imprisonment, bail jumping and disorderly conduct and was released on a $5,000 signature bond with the condition that he maintain absolute sobriety.

On June 16, Curtin was charged in Wood County with an eighth drunken driving offense, obstructing an officer and fleeing an officer. He was released from custody on a $5,000 cash bail.

On July 13, Curtin failed to appear in court for his three pending cases, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
