Kids to shop with cops

Program recruiting participants, volunteers, donors

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office is working with area police departments to take 40 children Christmas shopping this holiday season.

This will be the second year for Shop with a Cop.

Shop with a Cop involves law enforcement officers from all agencies in Waupaca County, donating their time to take a group of children on a Christmas shopping spree on Dec. 1.

Children are selected by referrals from social service agencies, schools, and community, according to Sheriff Brad Hardel.

Donated gift cards are provided to each child. The children purchase Christmas gifts for their families while shopping at Waupaca Mills Fleet Farm.

Dinner for the children and officers, gift wrapping by volunteers, and games conclude the evening.

“The program provides the children an opportunity to experience the personal rewards of giving to others,” Hardel said.

Deputy Cameron Durrant, who is spearheading Shop with a Cop, said the program is looking for children to participate, volunteers to help wrap gifts, and donors to help cover the costs.

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office is accepting referrals from other law enforcement agencies, schools and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Applications are also being accepted from the community.

To be eligible, the children must reside in Waupaca County and be between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. They must not have participated in the program in the past.

Parents must be able to provide transportation to and from the event, have no pending criminal charges or be in the Waupaca County jail.

Children will be chosen based on the family’s financial difficulties, illness or other unfortunate circumstances.

Families who meet the eligibility requirements, may obtain an application by contacting Deputy Durrant at 715-258-4466, or email [email protected].

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 31. The program is limited to 40 participants. Applications will be screened and those who are accepted will receive a confirmation letter.

To help sponsor the program, make checks payable to WPSO-Shop with a Cop and mail to Deputy Cameron Durrant, C/O Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department, 1402 E. Royalton St., Waupaca, WI 54981.
