New shop offers bargains

Resale store opens in New London

By Scott Bellile

Local shoppers looking for a deal on clothing, accessories and home furnishings have a new option in downtown New London: The Bargain Outlet, located at 110 North Water Street.

The resale shop opened in August and will hold its grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 17, with store specials and free snacks. The Bargain Outlet sells new and used clothing, belts, wallets, collectible knives, DVDs, jewelry and more.

Store owner and Shiocton resident Mark Westby said ever since his teen years he has enjoyed buying secondhand items, restoring them if necessary and selling them at flea markets or antique malls.

The Bargain Outlet gives Westby a brick and mortar home where he can sell inventory in the front and restore furniture in the back.

“It’s set up good for what I do,” Westby said.

Westby said he likes the freedom of running his own place and choosing his inventory. His main focus is being the lowest price around because today he notices people are “watching their pennies.”

Shiocton resident Kathy Young stepped up to the cash register and said the store had a little bit of everything but wasn’t cluttered and overwhelming like other resale shops she has visited.

“I walked in the door, and within four minutes I had something I was looking for for at least [the last] two months,” Young said.

Although the store now mixes restored furniture, clothing and accessories, Westby said he may take it in one specialized direction if he discovers he likes selling certain inventory the most.
