Polar Plunge draws big crowd again

Event held despite thin ice on lake

Not even a later-than-normal start to winter could stop people from ringing in the new year at the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes Polar Plunge.

Only a few inches of ice covered Lime Kiln Lake near the County Trunk Q bridge, but it was enough for a small area to be cleared away at Becker Marine for the annual event.

This year’s plunge had more spectators than participants, but that’s usually the case, especially when the weather is cold. Although temperatures in past plunges have been in the 30s, participants in this year’s event found temperatures in the low 20s.

The plunge benefits the Waupaca Fire Department. People had an opportunity to donate to their favorite firefighter and the top two had to take the plunge or buy their way out with their own personal donation.
