Series to addresses frac sand mining

Event scheduled at nature center

Mosquito Hill Nature Center will kick off its 2016 Third Thursday Lecture Series Jan. 21 with a presentation on frac sand mining.

Dr. Joanne Kluessendorf, geologist and founding director of the Weis Earth Science Museum in Menasha, will present the program at 9:30 a.m. at the center, located two miles east of New London off of County Trunk S at N3880 Rogers Road.

She will explain why Wisconsin sand is so special that it is sent to the desert country of Saudi Arabia. She will also discuss the properties of frac sand, the geologic processes that produced it and what it is used for.

A light snack, coffee and conversation will follow. The cost is $6 per person or $4 for students, senior citizens and Friends of Mosquito Hill.
