Hoerning, Duane L.

Duane L. Hoerning, age 79, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, February 4, 2016.

Duane was born on October 4, 1936 in New London, the son of the late Edward and Madeline (Hendersen) Hoerning. On February 1, 1958, Duane was united in marriage to Jeri Brehmer. Duane was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal brother and friend. His greatest joy in life was time with his family. Duane treasured the family’s annual camping trip to Lake Tomahawk, that included all children, spouses and grandchildren. This has been a 40+ year tradition. Other traditions precious to Duane’s heart, were his fishing/hunting trips with the boys, family reunions and holiday celebrations. From 1954-1958 he attended St. Norbert College where he was a 4 year letter winning football player. Duane was a captain of the US Army Reserves from 1958-1965. Duane had a long and successful 34 year career in education. His career began in 1960 at St. John’s High School, Essexville, MI, as a teacher, coach and athletic director. He earned a Master’s Degree from the University if Michigan in 1965. Duane taught and coached at Southern Door High School from 1965-1966 and was the principal from 1966-1971. After moving to Green Bay he became an assistant principal at Southwest from 1971-1975. He then went on to be principal at Edison Jr. High School in Green Bay from 1975-1977, and from 1977-1982 he was principal at Green Bay East High School. In 1982 he became the Director of Secondary Education in Green Bay and remained there until 1990. Duane then became principal at Preble High School from 1990-1995 and in 1995 retired from the Green Bay Area Public Schools. Duane was a member of the Knights of Columbus, through which he headed local Tootsie-Roll fundraising drives to benefit community members with special needs. He also has a long history of church service as a communion distributor, lector and choir member.

Duane is survived by his wife, Jeri; six children, Tammy (Tom) Haefer, Crowley, TX; Lisa (Brad) Hansen, Appleton; Michele (Mike) Plazony, Fairview, PA; Ann (Ryan) Wessley-Polcik, Crystal Lake, IL; Andra (John) Mory, Neenah and Corey Hoerning, Burnsville, MN. Duane is further survived by his 16 grandchildren: Krista (Tim), Alec, Anna, Danielle, Aaron, Ryan, Cara, Jake, Caitlin, William, Rylee, Caroline, Kendall, Will, Erica, and Ian. He is also survived by his brothers, Dick (Marlene), Robert “Bud” (Joyce) and Gary (Sandy).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Duane at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2016 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in New London. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 7, 2016 from 2-4 p.m., with a Knights of Columbus prayer service at 3:30 p.m., at Cline and Hanson Funeral Home in New London. Visitation will also take place from 9-11 a.m. at the church on Monday. Military rites will be held.
