Waupaca boys’ hockey to open tournament on the road

By Greg Seubert

The Waupaca boys’ hockey team now knows its first opponent for the upcoming WIAA state tournament.

The Comets are seeded ninth in its sectional and will face No. 8 seed Ashwaubenon at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Cornerstone Ice Center in De Pere. The winner will then take on top-seeded Appleton United at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Appleton Family Ice Center in Appleton.

Waupaca came out on the short end of a 5-0 score Feb. 5 in a rescheduled game with Mosinee, but handed Lakeland a 2-1 loss the following day on Parents’ Night.

The Comets took a 2-0 lead at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center with a pair of goals in the second period from Mitchell Trzebiatowski and Cody Rasmussen. Rasmussen and Cannon Hermanson assisted on Trzebiatowski’s goal.

Lakeland cut the lead in half in the third period on Austin Chart’s goal, but the Thunderbirds couldn’t come up with the tying score.

Lakeland outshot the Comets 25-21.

“It was a great hockey game that was fun to watch,” coach Dave Crisman said. “It didn’t always work out our way, but we got shots. This young goalie they have (Nathan Pitek) is all-conference caliber. You just have to get shots on him. We could have had a few more, but he made some great saves.”

Mosinee 5, Waupaca 0
The Indians completed the season sweep by shutting out the Comets in Mosinee.

Michael Alfonso scored twice for Mosinee.

The Comets will host Ashwaubenon Feb. 9 and will wrap up the regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at Medford.
