Wrestlers advance to sectionals

Hortonville wins Division 1 regional

Twenty-five area wrestlers will compete in their respective sectionals Saturday, Feb. 20, after qualifying at regional meets in Mosinee, Amherst, Pulaski and Hortonville.

Here’s a rundown on which wrestlers are moving on:

Division 1
Hortonville Regional: The host Polar Bears are sending 11 wrestlers to the Ashwaubenon Sectional. They include champions Eric Barnett (106 pounds), Curtis Diedrich (132), Nathan Lichtfuss (138), Joe Cliver (152), Elliot Luker (170), Jack Huebner (220) and Jacob Stein (285). Also advancing are Bryce Gerner (113), Colin Schuler (120), Jacob Barnett (126) and Brad Conger (160). The Polar Bears also won the regional with 270 points and will wrestle Pulaski at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Green Bay West in a team sectional.

Pulaski Regional: New London’s Scott Cook win the 132-pound title and will wrestle Feb. 20 at the Ashwaubenon Sectional, while Jacob Gaboury-Gorges (126) and Kaine Herter (152) also advanced.

Division 2
Mosinee Regional: Waupaca’s Mitchell Rotta and Tanner Johnson will head to the Oconto Falls Sectional. Rotta won the 160-pound championship, while Johnson finished second at 120. Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli’s Cole Warzynski also won the 285-pound championship.

Division 3
Amherst Regional: Cian Fischer (106) and Dylen Kicherer (220) won championships for Weyauwega-Fremont, while Justin Kempf (113) and Tyler Wetzel (138) placed second. Bryce Holderman (170) placed first for Amherst, while Jacob Simonis (120), Gavin Sneller (182) and Max Villnow (195) placed second. All seven wrestlers will head to the Bonduel Sectional in Shawano.
