James “Jim” E. Sanders, age 75, died Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Holy Family Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc, after a two-year battle with lung cancer.

Jim was born on June 23, 1940 in New London, WI, son of the late Walter and Louise (Diedrich) Sanders. He was raised on the family dairy farm near Fremont and after graduating from Weyauwega High School, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. The big adventure of his life was a voyage to Antarctica aboard the icebreaker U.S.C.G.C. Eastwind by way of New Zealand, Australia and Pitcairn Island. After leaving the service he obtained his B.S. degree in Soil Science from the UW-Madison. It was there he met the former Donna Hurd and they were married on April 13, 1971 in Escanaba, MI. After graduation he worked for the Soil Conservation Service and during the next 23 years he was posted to Trempealeau, Wood, Monroe, Ashland, Adams, Eau Claire and Chippewa Counties. His last post was Manitowoc County. After retiring he worked at Greiling Farms in Denmark and the Piggly Wiggly in Manitowoc.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; five children: Louise (Lee Thomas) Strycharske, Charles Town, WV and her five children: Maria (Josh) Rabinowitz, Carl (Alicia), Daniel, Jennifer and Rache; Kathleen Sanders, Washburn, WI and her two children, Hanna (Dane) Ruberg and Serena; David Sanders, Manitowoc, WI and his two children, Tehya and Seth; Tyson Sanders, Chippewa Falls, WI, and Derek (Douang See) Sanders, Brooklyn Park, MN; one brother, Ronald Sanders, Culpeper, VA. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dennis and David.

Jim was cremated and there will be graveside services in the spring at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Fremont, WI. The Pfeffer Funeral Home and All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
