Library to screen ‘Chariots of Fire’

First Thursday Film Series in Waupaca

The Oscar-winning film “Chariots of Fire” will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

The Best Picture winner for 1981 features British actors Ian Charleson, Ben Cross and Ian Holm, as well as American players Brad Davis and Dennis Christopher. “Chariots of Fire” tells the true story of several runners in the track and field events of the 1924 Olympics and is a film rich in period detail.

The movie also won Oscars for Screenplay, Costumes and Original Musical Score.

Dr. Jack Rhodes will introduce the film and provide background on its context and some of the reasons for its enduring success.

“This movie seemed an ideal choice for revisiting in an Olympic year,” Rhodes said. “Director Hugh Hudson, in his feature film debut, does a fine job of showing the human dimension behind the strenuous physical and emotional challenges facing Olympic athletes. It is indeed an inspirational and beautiful movie which faithfully recreates the era in which its story is set.”

Admission is free and no reservations are required. Complimentary popcorn, sodas and theater treats will be provided.
