Local varsity golf teams finally get on course

Manawa hosts season’s first area invitational

By Greg Seubert

The weather is finally starting to cooperate for area boys’ golf teams.

Weyauwega-Fremont, Iola-Scandinavia and Manawa kicked off their season April 11 at the Manawa Invitational at Cedar Springs Golf Course, while Waupaca will open its season Friday, April 15, at the rescheduled Wautoma Invitational at Wautoma’s Waushara Country Club.

I-S and W-F placed second and fourth, respectively, at Cedar Springs, while Manawa did not field a complete team.

Team scores were Pacelli (281), I-S (292), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (294), W-F (309), Amherst (327), Shiocton (340), Bonduel (343), Gresham/Menominee Indian (400) and Marion (409).

Season previews for each area team are:

Waupaca

The Comets are replacing all five starters from last year’s team, including Eastern Valley Conference golfer of the year Frankie Ellingson.

Still, coach Tom Noltner hopes his team can make some noise in the new North Eastern Conference, which also includes teams from Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Luxemburg-Casco, Marinette, Oconto Falls and Wrightstown.

Also gone from last year’s team are Ben Stone, Turner Kelly, Hunter Carrick and Max Hansen.

“We are replacing all five starters from last year’s team, but we will compete to the best of our ability and improve throughout the season,” Noltner said.

The roster includes senior Elliot Crisman; juniors Tegan Noltner, Logan Bunge, Alex Panzenhagen, Isaac Wright and Rob Durfee; sophomores Spencer Grams, Brett Hanke, Mason Gardner and Noah Carrick; and freshmen Caleb Schuelke, Ethan Heisler, Austin Reach, Grant Fass and Mason Minton.

“This year’s team knows what it takes to be competitive, as they have learned a lot from last year’s team about hard work and dedication,” Noltner said. “This year’s team is young, but will gain a lot of experience throughout the season to help them in the future.”
