Waupaca boys, W-F girls win county meet

Volz, Taylor receive top athlete award

Waupaca and Weyauwega-Fremont won boys’ and girls’ track championships, respectively, Saturday, April 23 at the Waupaca County Meet.

The seven team meet, which also included teams from Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa, Clintonville, New London and Marion, returned to Waupaca High School after being held for several years in New London.

Team scores for the boys were Waupaca (233), New London (134), Manawa (96), Clintonville (90), Weyauwega-Fremont (61) and Iola-Scandinavia (41). Team scores for the girls were Weyauwega-Fremont (164.5), Waupaca (112), Iola-Scandinavia (86), New London (76), Marion (72), Clintonville (68) and Manawa (65.5).

Christian Overman, Mitchell Rotta and Blake Orr each won two events for the Waupaca boys. Overman won the 110- and 300 hurdles; Rotta won the 1,600- and 3,200 runs; and Orr won the discus and shot put.

Other winners for the Waupaca boys included Jake Piencikowski in the pole vault, Brandon Anderson in the 400-meter dash and Hunter Smith in the 800-meter run. Meanwhile, Bruce Sternweis, Ben Waitrovich, Caleb Studzinski and Ryan Esch teamed up to win the 3,200-meter relay.

The Comets also had a pair of double-winners on the girls’ side, as Tatiana Sotka won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and Michelle Petkovsek won the 400 and 800. Avrey Simonson also won the long jump.

The W-F girls only won four events, but placed second in five others.

Becky Schroeder won the high jump and 300 hurdles, while Cara Volz won the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump. Volz went on to share the meet’s Most Valuable Athlete Award with Clintonville’s Todd Taylor.

Other event winners included Iola-Scandinavia’s Erika Kisting in the girls’ 3,200 and Jalen Block in the boys’ high jump.

Relay teams that placed first including the W-F boys’ 400 team of Payton Magdanz, Dylan Pankow, Brandon Hanes and Hunter McClone; the Manawa boys’ 800 team of Daniel Teuscher, Trenton Saunders, Ethan Hass and Zach Kreklow; the Manawa boys’ 1,600 team of Sam Welch, Zach Kreklow, Saunders and Hass; the Manawa girls’ 800 team of Lexi Smiles, Laynie Bessette, Claire Kreklow and Haley Reierson; the W-F girls’ 1,600 team of Mikaela Hintz, Schroeder, Natalie Schneider and Volz; and the I-S girls’ 3,200 team of Jada Beacom, Leighten Fischer, Kisting and Brynn Rasmussen.
