Waupaca baseball squad 11-1 for season

Waupaca’s baseball team picked up three North Eastern Conference wins, a come-from-behind win over Antigo and improved to 11-1 on the season.

The Comets overcame an early 2-0 deficit May 2 in a 12-4 win over Luxemburg-Casco and added a pair of 8-0 wins over Little Chute. Waupaca also handed Antigo a 5-4 loss April 29.

WAUPACA – Ty Dorner’s two-run home run in top of the first inning gave the Spartans a quick 2-0 lead, but Waupaca’s Walker Smith added a solo shot in the bottom of the frame to put the Comets on the board.

Dorner struck again with a solo home run in the third, but Waupaca took the lead for good with a four-run third that included Brenden Canterbury’s two-run single and run-scoring hits from Jason Ellie and Brandon Watts.

The Comets added to their lead with a five-run fifth. Jake Popham drove in a pair of runs with a single and Watts had a RBI double.
The Spartans came up with a run in the fifth, but never got any closer.

Ryan Dayton picked up the win on the mound in relief. Watts had two of Waupaca’s eight hits, while Hayden Neidert also drove in two runs.

Waupaca 5, Antigo 4
WAUPACA – Ellie had two hits and scored twice in a win over the Red Robins.

Waupaca scored a run in the first, but Antigo tied the game in the third and went up 4-1 with three more in the fourth.

The Comets came up with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth and held the Red Robins scoreless in the top of the seventh.

Neidert also had two hits for Waupaca and Popham drove in two runs. Dayton got the win on the mound.

Waupaca 8, Little Chute 0
LITTLE CHUTE – Smith threw a no-hitter April 28 and struck out 11 Little Chute batters in a win over the Mustangs.

Neither team scored until the Comets came up with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Waupaca then added three more runs in the fifth, one in the six and two in the seventh.

Canterbury had two of Waupaca’s 11 hits.

WAUPACA – Shane Olsen, Johnny Popham and Jake Popham each had two of Waupaca’s 11 hits April 26 and Ellie picked up the win on the mound.

The Comets scored three times in the third inning, twice in the fourth and fifth and once in the sixth.

Waupaca played at Luxemburg-Casco May 3 and will host Marinette for a North Eastern doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7.
