She was born in the Town of Lanark on May 17, 1921 to the late Joseph and Frieda (Voss) Cartwright. She met her husband, Howerde in New London and were married in 1945. They celebrated their 50th anniversary party in Waupaca with family and friends. He preceded her in death in 2001. Irene was an avid Bridge player and also enjoyed reading. She and Howerde traveled and lived in many places: Alabama, Indonesia, Iowa, Colorado, California and eventually settled in Birmingham in 1983.
She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Philbin of Highlands Ranch, CO; son, Howerde Sauberlich (significant other, Shari Calloway) of Birmingham, AL; three grandchildren: Sean Sauberlich of California, Veda Philbin of Colorado and Adam Philbin of Georgia. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howerde; son-in-law, George Philbin; a brother, LaVern Cartwright and three sisters: Bernice Sauberlich, Sylvia Durrant and Josephine Nelson.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Sheridan Cemetery in the Town of Farmington with Chaplain John Schmidt officiating. The Maple Crest Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
