Walker Smith hits three-run home run

Walker Smith has had the Denmark baseball team’s number this season.
Two days after holding the Vikings to one hit in a 3-0 win, the Waupaca senior hit a three-run home run May 19 to help the Comets pick up a 5-0 North Eastern Conference win and clinch the first-ever North Eastern Conference championship.
Meanwhile, the Comets dropped a 5-4 nonconference decision to Stevens Point May 23.
Waupaca 5, Denmark 0
WAUPACA – Smith’s homer in the fourth inning gave the Comets a 5-0 lead.
Jason Ellie picked up complete-game win on the mound and held the Vikings to two hits. Smith and Jake Popham had two of the Comets’ six hits.
SPASH 5, Waupaca 4
WAUPACA – The Comets came back from a 4-0 deficit against the Panthers May 23 in a rescheduled nonconference matchup, but came up a run short.
SPASH scored a run in the top of the first inning and added three more in the fourth. Waupaca cut the deficit to a run with three runs in the fifth, but the Panthers scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the sixth.
Waupaca scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but SPASH left fielder Brandon Patoka cut down Michael Johnson at the plate as he attempted to score the tying run with two outs.
Johnny Popham had three of the Comets’ 10 hits, while Brenden Canterbury chipped in with two.
The Comets finished North Eastern play May 27 at home against Wrightstown and will wrap up the regular season at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 26, with a rescheduled home game against Mosinee.
