Amherst handed the Iola-Scandinavia a 9-6 loss May 31 in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal.

Mason Peterson drove in a run for Amherst in the first inning.

Seth Korb reached on a hit in the third for the T-Birds and tied the game on Cam Gruenwald’s hit.

The T-Birds loaded the bases in the fourth on hits from Scott Aasen and Brady Snyder and a walk to Caleb Loken. Aasen scored on an error and Nate Korb drove in a pair of runs to give the T-Birds a 4-1 lead.

The Falcons took the lead for good with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ben Gutschow drove in three runs with a triple.

I-S loaded the bases again in the sixth. Gruenwald and Jayden Sivertson walked to drive in runs that cut the Falcons’ lead to 9-6.

Those turned out to be the T-Birds’ final runs of the season.

I-S had a chance to cut into the lead in the top of the seventh on Snyder’s walk and hits from Nick Hansen and Loken, but a double play ended the game.

The Falcons advanced to a regional final June 1 against top-seeded Pacelli, but fell to the Cardinals 5-4.
